As chiropractors, we are often being asked who we would go to if we were traveling, lived in another state, needed a referral for a friend or family member in a California city (other than Santa Monica), or were attending a conference and were seeking an adjustment.

Our Brentwood chiropractor Dr. Ken Gee Ehrlich said he recently made a referral to Dr. Joel Taatjes (Redwood Chiropractic) who practices in Petaluma. He had some friends that were heading towards northern California for a week of snowboarding and they were seeking someone in Dr. Joel’s area. Ehrlich said he knows Dr. Joel from attending continuing education conferences and mentioned that he’s referred people to him in the past. He says Dr. Joel is a great chiropractor and he is even an avid snowboarder.

Mike Dorausch said his last long distance referral was made to Dr. Kathy McAuliffe who is a Columbia chiropractor practicing in Illinois. One of his former BMX pros moved to the Columbia area (lots of space for building trails) and they were seeking someone who had significant experience. McAuliffe was recognized in 2007 as one of the nation’s five fantastic female chiropractors.

Dr. Luke Cohen (Pacific Palisades and Malibu area) said that he’s made a number of referrals to Dr. Adam Church in the town of East Haven Connecticut. Cohen said that while traveling earlier in 2007, he met a number of rugby players from the Connecticut area. When they found that he was a chiropractor they began asking him questions about injuries, performance and increasing playing time with chiropractic adjustments. Dr. Luke’s experience is a good example why it’s important to stay connected with chiropractors in different parts of the world.

Dr. Brandon Takahashi of West Los Angeles said he made a whopping seven referrals to chiropractors in different parts of the United States in the past week. One was for someone in Florida, another was in San Diego, a third was in Lancaster (California not Pennsylvania), and three referrals were for a family that moved from the West LA area to Sacramento. He said that family was referred to Dr. Jeri Anderson who practices at Capitol chiropractic in Sacramento.

Dr. Brandon says he still likes the old-fashioned method of holding onto colleagues business cards that he gets at conferences and seminars. He said that he also collects cards that are brought to him by new patients in case the opportunity ever comes up to pay forward on a referral that he’s received.

Take a Walk at the Venice Canals

Most of us know that one of the best forms of exercise we can get is daily walking. Living in the Santa Monica and Venice beach areas we really have little excuse for not getting outside for exercise. Those of you busy sitting in traffic on Lincoln Boulevard or the 10 freeway have somewhat of an excuse but you should still be able to get out and get moving.

Even if you lived in the Santa Monica or Venice area for many years, you may not regulate take advantage of some of the great places you can walk around in these two coastal cities. Photograph shown here is along one of the canals in Venice Beach, California and you can see the walk path running up the right side in the photograph.

All of the canals feature walk paths and they have become quite a popular place to go out and get some exercise. You don’t have the live along the canals to enjoy them. Of course some residents would prefer you just stay home but the canals themselves are public property that are maintained by the city of Los Angeles. Most residents living along the Venice canals are quite friendly and do lots of walking themselves.

During the week it should not be difficult to find parking if you’re going to drive to the area. On the weekends you may want to park a few blocks away like somewhere north of Ocean Blvd. so that you’re not caught driving around in the neighborhood seeking out a parking space.

You can bring your dog along for a walk but please be sure to be a responsible dog owner. Dogs not on a leash in this area can be a risk to others and themselves. There are all sorts of wildlife along the canals, especially ducks, so dogs off leash can easily become dogs swimming in the canal.

It’s great to get out and breathe some fresh air, taking a leisurely walk in the neighborhood. Walking is great for your spine and mind. It gets motion in the joints, helps move fluids through your body, gets your entire musculoskeletal system activated, and stimulates brain function, especially when walking in places as beautiful as the Venice canals.

Santa Monica area chiropractors wish you happy summer

Chiropractors in the Santa Monica area wish you a happy, healthy, and safe summer. This time of year activities in the beach areas of Southern California pick up considerably. There is a great increase in traffic on places such as Lincoln Boulevard, PCH highway, and nearly every Street along the beach in Santa Monica and Venice.

For those of you driving in the area, be extra careful and watch out for pedestrians, persons on skateboards, bicyclists, and riders zigzagging in and out of traffic on motorcycles.

The beach is a great place to be this summer. There are lots of volleyball events, with many courts right here in Santa Monica at the end of ocean Park Blvd. There is some good surf, miles of open sand to run on, throw frisbees on, play football on, or kick around a soccer ball.

The bike path in this area runs south from to Temsecal Canyon, in the Palisades area, along the beach in Santa Monica, through Venice beach, and into Marina del Rey.

Expect to see large amounts people on the bike path during the weekends all summer long. It’s a great idea to always wear a bike helmet, especially if you’re not just going along for a leisurely ride on a beach cruiser. Watch out for kids and tourists crossing in the bike lanes, as they often don’t know they are there and they frequently stop dead in their tracks when noticing bicycles coming from an opposite direction.

Westside Chiropractors with Hands on Experience

Quite frequently new people coming to my Los Angeles chiropractic office tell me they never received an adjustment at the last chiropractic office they went to.

The story typically goes like this… person went to the office, staff put hot-packs or cold packs on them, maybe some electrodes, a roll on a therapy table, and maybe a brief visit from the chiropractor, but never an adjustment.

That may seem really odd to someone who has been going to chiropractors for years, receiving regular chiropractic care on each visit, but it’s not as uncommon as one may think.

I spoke with other West Los Angeles and beach city chiropractors and it turns out they have had similar experiences. In all cases the people that came to the office were delighted to actually get hands on care from a Doctor of Chiropractic. They did not get layed on some overpriced spinal decompression unit or stuck in a room with electrodes and heat packs.

Chiropractors that I know of on the Westside in the Los Angeles area that will adjust your spine include Drs. Brandon Takahashi at Takahashi Chiropractic, Luke Cohen at Innate Chiropractic Center in Pacific Palisades, Don Trepany at Trepany Chiropractic, Rob Bates at Bates Chiropractic (Manhatten Beach), Donna and Dominique Scott of Life Chiropractic, Ken Gee Erlich at Good Chiropractor, and myself, Michael Dorausch at ADIO Chiropractic (Marina del Rey).

Chiropractors working together for success

Four local chiropractors in the Santa Monica area have teamed up in an effort to better serve people in the beach communities of Santa Monica, Malibu, Venice, Marina del Rey, and surrounding areas.

Doctors Michael Dorausch, Luke Cohen, Ken Gee Ehrlich, and Brandon Takahashi have continued an organized effort to see that members of the community are getting the best chiropractic services possible.

The Santa Monica area gets a heavy amount of automobile traffic and it can significantly affect one’s ability to not only get to the chiropractor’s office, but to get around town, get to work, the gym, or nearest Starbucks.

All four doctors are chiropractic patients themselves and they discovered that trying to get across town during busy hours can become a serious pain in the neck. The group decided to do something that is virtually unheard of, especially in a field that can be so competitive. They decided in order to best serve people in the community they would make patients aware of the other three doctors in the area so that patients had the choice not to drive so far if that was an issue for them in getting chiropractic care.

So far the service has been working terrific for the patient’s as well as the doctors. Dr. Luke Cohen, a Pacific Palisades chiropractor, has referred a number of patients to Dr. Dorausch, who is the one practicing the furthest south, he is a Marina del Rey chiropractor. Dr. Cohen made the referrals in each case after patients made comments about traffic getting to the Palisades area from where they lived or worked in Westchester, El Segundo, or other local areas. What has happened as a result is that Dr. Dorausch ended up referring a number of new and several existing patients, most of whom were living in the Malibu or Thousand Oaks area, to Dr. Cohen’s office.

The other doctors have been having similar experiences. Together, the group has found that they’ve actually been able to take care of more people more efficiently than they would have without communicating with each other. About the group effort, Dr. Mike Dorausch said “you cannot out give the giver.” Dr. Dorausch went on to say “there are many people in the Los Angeles area seeking good chiropractors, and all four of us have shared that experience at one time or another. These are the doctors we use when we are seeking chiropractic care for ourselves or our family members. I am totally confident and comfortable referring to any of these three chiropractors, they are the best in the area.”

Dr. Brandon Takahashi is a graduate of Los Angeles Chiropractic College. He lives in the Brentwood area and practices in West Los Angeles, on 11340 W. Olympic Blvd. Drs. Ken Gee Ehrlich, Luke Cohen and Michael Dorausch are each graduates of Cleveland Chiropractic College (the Los Angeles campus). Growing up in the Palisades

Growing up in the Palisades and Santa Monica I always stayed active skateboarding, surfing, and playing sports. At the age of seven I started to develop a painful limp and suffered from migraines that almost completely disabled me from my daily activities. Eventually I saw my doctor. The tests and x-rays led to medications that did not work. As the years passed, my condition worsened. I got sick frequently, and was put on different antibiotics which became a downward spiral leading to more antibiotics. My vision became weak and I eventually ended up needing glasses. â€œI always thought, there had to be something I could do.â€ As I had almost given up hope, a friend suggested that I go to a chiropractor. At first I was slightly hesitant; however I was desperate for a solution so I decided to go. The adjustment gave me immediate relief. The chiropractor explained to me that my body had been out of balance and was pinching my nerves causing the problem. After I completed my care I no longer had headaches, back pain, a painful limp, and didnâ€™t get sick. After a few more months of care my eyesight improved and I stopped wearing glasses.

Now for the photo (we’ll post it soon)â€¦ These are my patients Alex and John. Both of these boys came to me not hearing well, not speaking well or pronouncing their words correctly due to chronic ear infections. The combination of all these factors caused them to struggle in school. They came to my office seeking help. Last winter was the first winter they boys did not get sick. They both are doing excellently in school and have their lives in front of them. As a doctor there is nothing more rewarding than being able to assist people in overcoming there health obstacles, and getting their lives back.
