Running the Santa Monica Pier

I haved lived in Venice for several years now. When I first moved to the area I thought the distance between the Venice pier (at the end of Washington blvd.) and the Santa Monica pier (at the end of Colorado Blvd.) were miles apart.

Turns out they are miles apart but not as much as they may appear. Back in 2002 I got my first Garmin forerunner, a global GPS tracking device that is used for running and cycling. I began wearing my GPS while running between the piers so I could track my milage.

If you are running along the sand on the shoreline your roundtrip distance, beginning at the southmost pilons (cement poles) of the Santa Monica pier, and turning just under the Venice pier, you’ll total 5.7 miles, just a bit shy of a 10K run.

What is great about running from pier to pier is the fresh breeze comming of the water. You’ll see lot’s of people walking and running this route, especially during times of year (like now) when there are not so many tourists on the beach.

I’ll get a map posted and will add some data from my GPS to these pages so you can get a better idea of running in the area.

I have mapped out many 5K and 10K running maps in Venice, Marina del Rey, and Santa Monica so I may as well post them and make use of the info.

i did this run on the sand yesterday - santa monica pier to a little before venice pier and back - and loved it. i usually run on the bike path, but running on the sand during the late afternoon on sunday was great. good to know it was a 5 mile or so run…that is how i found your post, i had googled distance between s m pier and venice pier. as it happens i also need to get adjusted, esp in the left SI region.

Thank you for the running information. Have you ever charted the distance from Hermosa pier to Manhattan? Or, farther south, Torrance Beach guard station to the Redondo jetty?
